As someone who's been part of stuffing a Ford Cosworth engine into an E36, I see nothing wrong with this :)

I like it! I'm more of an "Axis and Allies" guy myself.

It looks like it belongs there. very cool. perhaps if my E36 engine dies I'll have to look at this.

Not exactly. I hate 99.99% of engine swaps, most especially in Japanese cars.
Reliability can come in the form of maintenance, and if you lack the money or skills to do so, you have no business being near any RX7.

But it's so pretty! Just wish they hadn't saddled it with and unreliable drivetrain.

It's not unreliable, people just don't take care of them. High maintenance if you will.

Maybe. But seeing as how most (unscientific I know) engines and turbos have had to be replaced in FDs, that seems unreliable to me.

It not different than buying a car like a v10 M5 or something, it's different, and you have to know what you're getting into. They aren't inherently unreliable, but the moment you treat them like just any other car on the road they're going to have issues. Looking at the history of the rotary, especially in motorsports, you'll see that engine related failures are actually pretty rare and they have proven to be a good choice for endurance style racing, but all the same principles that make them good for that also make them not so good for a daily driver. Short trips, skipping maintenance, driving like a grandma, all contribute to their early demise. I really don't see what the turbo's failing has to do with the cars, if I'm not mistaken, those are GReddy(I could be very wrong) units in the FD and they are just as reliable as any other turbo that comes from the factory. Me theory on turbo failures goes hand in hand with the generally accepted theory on engine failure, which is the negligence of owners to stay on top of oil consumption, seals, bearings, and turbos all need lubrication.

You're not a petrolhead just because you stated engine A is less reliable than engine B.
I'm pretty sure LS engines had their shares of failures as well, hence the swap not being worth it. If you wanted a V8, go drive something that came with a V8.
